The Dirt on Soil
The Dirt on Soil component of the Environmental Science Unit allows students to explore the mineral particles of soil as well as the organisms that live in it through a webquest.
Soil Observations
Students are given two weeks to bring in a sandwich size sample of soil. They need to identify where they got it (ex. backyard under tree from house on Special Street in Anytown). Then, they do an initial observation of soil. The debris free soil gets returned to their bag for use in the Soil Texture activities. If there are living organisms in the soil (worms, grubs, etc.) I keep a critter bin and bring them outside afterclass. Other debris gets thrown away.
